Milton Keynes (MK) Hosts Launch of 'March for Men' to Promote Prostate Cancer Testing
Saturday, 21st June 2025
 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Registration from 8:30 AM)
Start: Old Bus Station (opposite Milton Keynes Train Station)
End: Christ the Cornerstone Church (opposite Marks & Spencer)

To close Men’s Health Week and respond to the urgent need for greater prostate cancer awareness, a coalition of health and advocacy organisations is launching a powerful new campaig in MK

This national initiative kicks off in Milton Keynes, aiming to spark open conversations, raise public awareness and encourage early testing for prostate cancer—the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men across the UK.

 The facts are sobering:

Over 52,000 new cases each year — that’s 143 men diagnosed daily
1 in 8 men will be diagnosed in their lifetime
1 in 4 Black men, the risk increases to half,
yet no national screening programme currently exists in the UK
To help close this critical gap, Stemax Consult Healthcare Service, Cancer UK-Salone, Prostate Cancer UK and Linked Events Ltd have come together to launch this initiative.

 Key Goals:
Raise awareness of prostate cancer and its disproportionate impact on Black men
Encourage open dialogue among men, families, and communities
Provide over 200 free PSA tests on the day
Advocate for a national screening programme
Join us in stepping up for men’s health. Every step counts. Every test matters.

At Cancer UK-Salone, we honour the strength, courage, and resilience of every individual who has faced cancer and continues to rise beyond it. Cancer survivorship is not just about overcoming a diagnosis—it’s about reclaiming life, embracing healing and inspiring hope in others.

On this International Cancer Survivor Day, we celebrate every survivor’s journey: the quiet battles, the loud victories and the unwavering spirit that drives them forward. Survivors remind us that even in the face of adversity, there is life after cancer and it is powerful, purposeful and full of possibility.

We celebrated Africa Day, we honor the rich cultures, values and traditions that define our heritage. But alongside celebration, we must also confront the challenges that threaten the wellbeing of our communities—particularly the health of our Black African men.

We know that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. But for Black men, the risk rises sharply—1 in 4 will develop the disease. The risk factors are clear: being male, being Black and having a family history of prostate or breast cancer.

Black Caribbean men have lived in the UK longer than many Black African communities, going back to the Windrush generation and now raising their third-generation Black British Caribbean families. As a result, there is generally more awareness among Caribbean men about the importance of health, research and family medical history—despite the historical mistrust of systems. Their longer engagement with the NHS has led to greater participation in health education and research.

In contrast, many of our Black African men are newer to this system. Awareness around prostate cancer remains low. There is little knowledge of family history, few conversations about screening and deep-rooted cultural barriers that prevent early detection.

In our African communities, we pride ourselves on tradition and resilience. But we must challenge the stigma, shame and silence that surround diseases like cancer. We must break these taboos—not because we reject our culture but because we want to protect and preserve our people.

Prostate cancer is treatable when detected early. But Black men will not be invited for routine screening—you have to ask for a PSA test. I encourage every man, especially Black African men, to speak with their GP. Ask questions. Know your history. Take action.

When we prioritise our health, we empower our families, strengthen our communities and secure a future where our men can thrive—not just as leaders and entrepreneurs—but as healthy, active fathers, brothers and sons.

Let us make prostate cancer awareness part of our African pride.

Cancer UK-Salone was honored to attend the European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress in Madrid, represented by Chair of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Augustine Thomas, and Trustee & President, Ms. Tina Davies OBE, with sponsorship from the EAU Patient Office. This opportunity marked a key step in our mission to amplify the voices of black men affected by prostate cancer and drive change.

Day 1: Patient Day – A Powerful Start
The congress began with Patient Day, uniting experts, advocates and survivors. A highlight was Jeff’s testimony, a prostate cancer survivor whose story emphasized the need for awareness and early intervention.

Professor James N’Dow OBE, a distinguished urologist, delivered a compelling call for action to protect future generations of black men, stressing the disproportionate burden of prostate cancer in this community.

A key session, “Prostate Cancer: Let’s Talk About Sex,” explored overlooked issues like sex aids and fertility concerns. The discussion revealed the postcode lottery in sperm banking and fertility preservation, limiting options for men especially black men diagnosed before starting a family.

Day 2: Stakeholders Meeting on Diversity PCa PROMs Study
Day two focused on the Diversity PROMs Study, which examines how ethnicity impacts prostate cancer outcomes in black men.

Professor E. Rogers, Chair of the EAU Patient Office, outlined the study’s goals, followed by a presentation from Denzil, the lead researcher, on key timelines and ensuring diverse representation. Discussions were engaging, with a strong commitment to advancing this research.

Looking Ahead – A Call to Action
The event ended on a high note, with a group photo capturing the shared commitment to tackling prostate cancer disparities.

A huge thank you to the EAU Patient Office and sponsors for making this experience possible. Cancer UK-Salone remains committed to driving change and ensuring no black man is left behind in the fight against prostate cancer.

On the 17th of July 2024, Cancer UK-Salone, in collaboration with the Western Area Urban Health Medical Team, organized a one-day workshop aimed at raising awareness of prostate cancer among healthcare workers. This crucial capacity-building initiative, attended by 20 healthcare workers from 20 primary health units, forms part of the broader Prostate Cancer SL Program launched by Cancer UK-Salone in November 2023. The program emphasizes early detection, education, and improved treatment outcomes for prostate cancer, which remains a significant health concern in Sierra Leone.

The workshop kicked off with a warm and insightful address by the District Medical Officer, who stressed the importance of early detection and the vital role healthcare workers play in spreading awareness about prostate cancer. With healthcare workers at the frontline of patient care, their ability to recognize early signs and provide support is critical in combating the disease.

Their combined expertise provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of prostate cancer, covering key topics such as:

On Saturday, 31 August 2024, Cancer UK-Salone made significant strides in prostate cancer awareness with a vital presentation by Dr. Len Gordon-Harris at the Western District Men’s Fellowship meeting. The event, held at Bethel Methodist Church in Wilberforce, was a pivotal moment in our ongoing Prostate Cancer SL Awareness Campaign, focusing on empowering men with knowledge about this prevalent health issue.

The presentation was attended by 70 Black Men, all over 40 years of age, who form the high-risk demographic for prostate cancer. Dr. Gordon-Harris provided an in-depth look at prostate cancer, its symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection. The attendees engaged in a thoughtful discussion, asking important questions about screening, treatment options, and lifestyle choices that could help mitigate their risk.

Thanks to our partners, Prostate Cancer UK, we were able to distribute informative literature to the attendees, offering them valuable resources to take home and share with their communities. We are deeply grateful for Prostate Cancer UK’s continued support, which helps us spread awareness and reach those who need it most. This event is part of a broader initiative by Cancer UK-Salone to address the challenges Black Men face regarding prostate cancer. Statistics show that Black men are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and often at a more advanced stage. This is why raising awareness in communities like ours is so critical.

As we build momentum, we are excited to announce our upcoming awareness walk, “Waka fɔ wi man dɛn” This will be our first awareness walk, and it represents a collective step toward improving men’s health across Sierra Leone. The walk will bring people together to show solidarity and encourage men to know their family history, take charge of their health through regular check-ups and informed decision-making.

Stay tuned for more details about “Waka fɔ wi man dɛn” in November in Freetown Sierra Leone and join us as we continue to raise awareness and support the men in our community.

           Statement:

           Ladies and gentlemen,

Today marks a pivotal moment in our collective journey towards better men's health in Sierra Leone. We stand here to launch the Prostate Cancer SL Campaign, an initiative aimed at initiating crucial conversations, dispelling stigma, and reducing the psychosocial and economic impact of prostate cancer on families.

In Sierra Leone, where one in four black men aged 46 and above faces the risk of prostate cancer, the need for awareness and action cannot be overstated.

Our collective family history, especially those with a legacy of prostate, breast, and ovarian cancers, accentuates the urgency for dialogue and early detection.

As we embark on this campaign, let us acknowledge Cancer UK-Salone for their commendable initiative in prioritizing prostate cancer. Their dedication paves the way for a healthier future, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.

This campaign isn't just about statistics; it's about the fathers, brothers, uncles, and sons who are at the forefront of this battle. We urge women to stand beside their loved ones, supporting them in their fight against this disease. Prostate cancer is among the most treatable cancers if diagnosed and treated early, and together, we can make a significant impact on the well-being of our families and communities.

Let this launch be the catalyst for change, breaking down barriers of stigma, shame isolation and fostering a culture of open dialogue surrounding men's health. The Prostate Cancer SL Campaign is not just a campaign; it is a commitment to our shared well-being, and with your support, we can make strides towards a healthier and more resilient Sierra Leone.

Cancer UK-Salone’s Breast Cancer Morning Coffee @ Community Skills Hub Waltham Cross.

Breast Cancer awareness and support reached new heights today 19.10.23 in Waltham Cross, thanks to the collaborative effort between the Community Skills Hub Waltham Cross and Community Alliance, Broxbourne & East Herts. The Breast Cancer Morning Coffee event was not only a testament to the strength of the community but also a heartfelt celebration of resilience and unity.

This event was made all the more special by the presence of Mayor Paul Seeby, who has been a consistent supporter of community initiatives. However, this time, the spotlight was on someone dear to his heart, his mother Mrs. Phylis Seeby, a breast cancer survivor and champion. Her presence served as an inspiring reminder of the courage and strength it takes to battle this disease, as well as the importance of support from friends and family.

Another hero in this narrative is Julie Gunnell, the Waltham Cross Barclays Bank manager. Her unflinching support for Cancer UK-Salone demonstrated the power of corporate involvement in charitable endeavors. Julie's dedication not only inspired but also showcased the impact one individual can make in the fight against breast cancer.

No successful event is complete without the generous contributions of local businesses. Tesco, with their Cheshunt and Brookfield Farm branches, came forward with donations of cakes, biscuits, teas, and chocolates. Their commitment to making the event not just successful but also enjoyable was palpable.

Lol Hill, Tesco Community Champion, deserves special thanks for her physical support during the event. Her presence and active participation highlighted the importance of community engagement and the impact of going the extra mile to support meaningful causes.

Bumzy Cakes added an extra layer of sweetness to the event with their sumptuous cupcakes. Their contribution was met with smiles and delight from all those in attendance, reminding us that small gestures can go a long way in making a difference.

The Breast Cancer Morning Coffee was a testament to the power of collaboration, community spirit, and unwavering support. It brought together individuals from all walks of life, united by a common cause. In honoring Mrs. Phylis Seeby, recognizing Julie Gunnell, and acknowledging the generosity of Tesco and Bumzy Cakes, this event not only raised funds and awareness but also served as a heartwarming example of how a community can come together to make a meaningful impact.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all those involved and look forward to many more successful events in the fight against breast cancer. Together, we can create a brighter, healthier future for all.

In a remarkable gathering of cancer advocates and champions, Prostate Cancer UK, in collaboration with Cancer UK-SALONE, participated in an inspiring Let’s talk Cancer in Potters Bar. This event served as a platform for knowledge-sharing, networking, and fostering a sense of unity within the cancer community.

One of the highlights of this gathering was the fantastic networking opportunities it provided. Participants had the privilege to meet other cancer champions, share their experiences, and collaborate on various initiatives aimed at combating cancer's multifaceted challenges. This networking aspect is invaluable as it allows for the exchange of ideas and the creation of a strong support system within the cancer family.

A moment of pride for Cancer UK-SALONE was the opportunity to give a short talk about their work in both the UK and Sierra Leone. It was a chance to shed light on the impactful endeavors that the organization has undertaken to improve cancer care and awareness. These moments of sharing insights into the fight against cancer only served to reinforce the sense of unity and purpose in the room.

The Potters Bar Cancer Workshop was not only an informative and empowering event but also a testament to the strength that can be found in collaboration. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Potters Bar for the opportunity to come together, share experiences, and strengthen the bonds within the cancer family. The work of cancer champions is more important than ever, and events like these remind us of the collective strength and determination that can drive positive change in the fight against cancer.

Cancer UK-Salone & Mayor’s Charity Caribbean Rum Tasting Event with Health Component.

In a splendid fusion of culture, charity and community support, the collaborative Cancer UK-Salone and Mayor’s Charity Hertfordshire Community Fund’s Caribbean Rum Tasting event proved to be an exceptional success. This memorable evening was a testament to the power of collaboration and goodwill.

The evening started with the Mayor of Broxbourne Cllr. Paul Seeby welcoming the guests his fellow Mayors from other Counties House keeping and a brief history of the former Cheshunt College where Missionaries were trained to you serve in African and Sierra Leone is one of the Countries that benefited. This demonstrated a friendship between Cheshunt and Sierra Leone. A brief statement by Ms. Tina Davies, OBE, OOR founder and President of Cancer UK-Salone. She gave a background of the charity and their work, she also welcomed the guest. Both parties MC’d the event.

On a Friday evening guests gathered at the Broxbourne Council members lounge eagerly anticipating a night of delightful rum tasting, cultural appreciation, philanthropy and health talk. The event showcased a remarkable blend of elements that made it a resounding success.

The star of the show was of course, the exquisite Caribbean rum from Wooden Moose. This artisanal rum, crafted with passion and expertise, took our guests to the heart of the Caribbean with each sip. The rich flavors and aromas of this fine spirit set the stage for an unforgettable evening.

The event's success would not have been possible without our guests who wholeheartedly supported the cause. Their presence not only added to the festive atmosphere but also demonstrated their commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer.

The generosity of the local businesses in Waltham Cross Town Centre who donated raffle prizes and a stunning Diamonte African dress for auction added a charitable dimension to the evening. These contributions not only raised funds but also added excitement and anticipation to the event.

Tesco’s and Morrison’s Community Champions played a pivotal role by supporting the raffle sales. Their involvement highlighted the importance of community engagement and corporate social responsibility in making positive change.

A special mention goes to Paul Munim from Prostate Cancer UK, partner of Cancer UK-Salone who delivered an informative and inspiring talk on Prostate Cancer especially 1 in 4 Black-men at risk of developing the disease. His insights and expertise shed light on crucial health issues, awareness and promoting well-being.

Behind the scenes, the Mayor’s Events Planning team, led by Karen and Chloe, orchestrated every detail flawlessly. Their dedication and meticulous planning ensured that the event ran smoothly and left a lasting impression on all who attended.

The success of Cancer UK-Salone and Mayor’s Charity Caribbean Rum Tasting event extends beyond the night itself. The funds raised will contribute significantly to ongoing cancer work, support for affected individuals and families and community initiatives championed by the Mayor’s Charity Hertfordshire Community Fund.

In the spirit of unity and generosity, this joint endeavor brought people together, showcased the vibrancy of Afro Caribbean culture, and made a profound impact on the fight against cancer. It serves as a reminder that when communities, businesses and individuals come together for a common cause, remarkable things can happen. Cheers to a successful event and may it inspire more acts of kindness and charity in the future.

On a pleasant afternoon in Waltham Cross, UK, Cancer UK-Salone Charity successfully organized a prostate cancer awareness campaign at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall. The event not only attracted the congregation of the church but also garnered the presence of esteemed guests, including His Lordship, the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Paul Seeby. With the aim of spreading awareness and offering support to those affected by prostate cancer, this event proved to be a significant step forward in the battle against this prevalent disease.

The primary focus of the prostate cancer awareness campaign was to empower the congregation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The event aimed to educate and inform attendees about the risks, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with prostate cancer. By raising awareness, Cancer UK-Salone Charity hoped to encourage early detection and inspire individuals to take proactive steps towards their health.

The event commenced with a series of educational discussions and the importance of regular screenings, emphasizing that early detection plays a crucial role in successfully treating prostate cancer.

Recognizing the emotional toll that prostate cancer can have on both patients and their families, Cancer UK-Salone Charity emphasised the need for support network. Information and literature for those affected by the disease and their families were on display and available for attendees to take away with them.

The significance of the event was further enhanced by the presence of His Lordship, the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Paul Seeby. His participation not only highlighted the importance of prostate cancer awareness but also showcased the commitment of local leadership to the well-being of the community. The Mayor's presence served as an inspiration and further motivated attendees to actively participate in the awareness campaign.

The prostate cancer awareness campaign organized by Cancer UK-Salone Charity at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall in Waltham Cross, UK, was a resounding success. Through information sharing, the event empowered the congregation and provided valuable knowledge about prostate cancer. The presence of His Lordship, the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Paul Seeby, further underscored the importance of community involvement in addressing health issues. By working together, organizations like Cancer UK-Salone Charity can continue to raise awareness, support affected individuals, their families and bring us one step closer to a world free from the burden of prostate cancer.

The President and Deputy Captain, alongside the club's manager, demonstrated their dedication to the cause and their willingness to support the community. By engaging with Cancer UK-Salone, an organization with expertise in cancer advocacy, prevention and support, the meeting was an opportunity to leverage collective knowledge and resources. Key Objectives of the Campaign:

Raising Awareness: The campaign aims to educate the public about prostate cancer, its risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of early detection through screenings.

By dispelling misconceptions and addressing cultural barriers, the goal is to empower men to take charge of their health.

Community Outreach: Through partnerships with local healthcare facilities and community leaders, the campaign will organize educational workshops, screenings, and outreach programs. These initiatives will target underserved areas, where access to healthcare is limited, to ensure that every man has an equal opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment.

Support and Resources: Recognizing the emotional and psychological impact of prostate cancer, the campaign will provide support networks and resources for patients and their families. This includes counseling services, support groups, and access to informational materials that promote overall well-being.

The launch of the prostate cancer campaign in Sierra Leone will mark an important milestone in the fight against this prevalent disease. With the support and commitment of Freetown Golf Club's President and his Executive, along with the expertise of Cancer UK-Salone's President and board of trustees, the campaign is well-positioned to make a lasting impact. By raising awareness, providing resources and advocating for policy changes, this collaboration has the potential to save lives and improve the overall well-being of men's health in Sierra Leone.

Donation of palliative Care Drugs to the Palliative Care Team. Connaught Hospital, Freetown Sierra Leone

Cancer UK-Salone in their effort to close the care gap donated palliative care drugs (Oramorph) worth £4,000 to the palliative care team in Connaught Hospital Freetown. This donation will help improve the quality of care that patients receive in the hospital.

Palliative care is an important aspect of medical care, particularly for patients who are facing serious illnesses like cancer. Palliative care focuses on providing relief from symptoms and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. It can include medications to manage pain, nausea, and other symptoms, as well as emotional and spiritual support.

Donations like this can make a significant difference in the ability of healthcare providers to provide quality palliative care. Access to palliative care drugs is often a challenge in many parts of the world especially in low-income countries like Sierra Leone. By donating these drugs, Cancer UK-Salone is helping to ensure that patients receive the care they need.

It's also worth noting that palliative care is an essential component of cancer care.

Even when a cure is not possible, palliative care can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for patients. By providing these drugs to the palliative care team at Connaught Hospital, Cancer UK-Salone is supporting the country’s efforts to provide comprehensive cancer care.

Overall, this donation is a great example of how partnerships between organizations can have a positive impact on healthcare outcomes. It's important to continue working together to improve access to quality healthcare for all people, especially the vulnerable and underprivileged women and children.

Cancer UK-Salone’s founder and president Ms. Tina Davies, OBE visited the Oncology Unit at Ola During Children's Hospital and brought some cheer to the children, their parents, and the nurses. It's always heartwarming to see acts of kindness like this, especially for those who are going through difficult times.

It's important to note that while small gestures like distributing beverages and chocolates may seem insignificant, they can have a significant impact on someone's day and overall well-being.

Cancer treatment can be incredibly challenging and can take a toll on both the patients and their families. Acts of kindness like this can help lift their spirits and make them feel supported.

It's also essential to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the nurses who work in oncology units. They play a critical role in his providing care and support to patients and their families, and their efforts often go unnoticed. By including them in the gesture of kindness, the Cancer UK-Salone founder and president recognized the importance of their work and showed appreciation for all that they do.

Overall, it's heartening to hear about acts of kindness and support for those going through difficult times, and it's essential to continue spreading positivity and love whenever possible.

This partnership is significant because cancer care in Sierra Leone has been severely impacted by the country's healthcare infrastructure challenges, limited resources, and lack of awareness about the disease. The collaboration between Cancer UK-Salone and Africell Sierra Leone Limited has the potential to improve cancer outcomes and save lives by increasing access to information, resources, and treatment for cancer patients in Sierra Leone.

The MOU was signed by Tina Davies, OBE, OOR President Cancer UK-Salone, Kippy Debs, Africell Customer Relations Director and witnessed by Angie Stankovic, Trustee Cancer UK-Salone.

Cancer UK-Salone held a successful two days WEAR IT PINK CAMPAIGN (breast cancer awareness) on the 21-22 October. The was witnessed by dignitaries, Mayor of Broxbourne Cllr Seeby, the Sierra Leone High Commissioner to UK and Ireland H.E Prof Morie Manyeh, Sir Charles Walker CBE Member of Member of UK Parliament House of Commons, Councillors from Labour and Conservative Parties.
Day1. Funding raising and awareness raising at Barclays Bank Walthamcross, JP Wetherspoon and Danny’s hair Saloon. Danny’s Saloon specifically selected because of the number of black Women hairdressers and female clients as the disease incidents are comparatively low in black women as opposed to the white and Caucasian but high mortality rate in knack women due to late presentation, lack of knowledge and opportunities.

Day 2 The Mayor stated that Early detection saves lives and encouraging women to attend their screening appointment. Stating that Covid effects has significantly reduced cancer screening from 71.4% to 54% and innovate strategies of awareness raising like Cancer UK-SALONE’s will hopefully help to increase upstate.

He ended by saying this is a great initiative by CANCER UK-SALONE charity, bringing the services to the people especially that the world has gone digital.

H.E Manyeh mentioned the name of the charity UK-Salone has a link with Sierra Leone as Salone stands for Sierra Leone. As the High Commissioner representing the Government of Sierra Leone in the UK I am delighted to join this campaign.

There are similarities of engagement and services of popular cancer charities or organisations , both in the UK and Sierra Leone, breast, cervical and prostrate but the major difference is, due to screening as a preventative measures the mortality cases in the UK are low whilst Sierra Leone has 75% mortality due to lack of screening as a result, very late presentation.

He continued by stating that, he would like to commend CANCER UK- SALONE for this bold step to raise awareness on this disease that affects thousands of women every year and hope this intervention will improve on screening uptake. Early detection can massively increase the chances of survival which is why fantastic campaigns like this are so important.

Mrs. Seeby, (mother of Mayor Seeby) a 91 old breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed 30 years ago encourage women to have their mammogram as that is how she was diagnosed as early detection saves lives.

The community members and shoppers were all delighted and engaged in the event as supported the fundraising by buying raffle tickets, making donations and picking up breast cancer information leaflets as the whole range were on display for people to pick up.
The President of Cancer UK-Salone Ms. Tina Davies, OBE, OOR thanked everyone on behalf of the board of trustees for attending and participating. She especially thanked the management of the Pavilion Shopping Centre for their support in providing the venue and their staff to support the event.

CANCER UK-SALONE’s President Tina Davies, OBE, OOR had a very productive meeting with the Sierra Leone WHO Country Representative Dr Steven Velabo Shongwe and a member of his technical team.

Our one-hour meeting was very productive, from Cancer Care Strategy, immediate priorities and missed opportunities.

WHO provides coordination, collaboration and technical support to governments in health systems strengthening. Let’s keep the conversation and collaboration going to reduce the extremely high cancer mortality in Sierra Leone.
